DIAGNOSTICS AND REAL-TIME DECISION-MAKING ’ AND ‘ 5G AND MANUFACTURING . COMMENTS FROM FIONA TREACY , MANAGING DIRECTOR , INDUSTRIAL AUTOMATION
Diagnostics and Real-Time Decision-Making
“ With advanced diagnostics , factories are collecting richer data , which helps improve real-time decisionmaking and allows operations to run smoothly .
A significant part of this is driven by the health and status information gathered from IoT devices at the Intelligent Edge of networks , where data processing and computation are performed closer to the devices and sensors that generate the data . Vibration sensing , predictive algorithms and machine-vision cameras are being used here to help monitor both product quality and machine performance .
“ AI algorithms analyze this data to provide insights that can predict problems like overheating , voltage fluctuations , or mechanical wear . Machine learning constantly improves these models by learning from past data , making interventions more accurate and timely .
“ In practice , AI-driven predictive maintenance enables machines to automatically diagnose and respond to potential issues . These systems can adjust how the equipment operates to avoid complete shutdowns , keeping things running until a technician can make the necessary repairs . For example , AI can optimize throughput and maintain high productivity , even during maintenance windows , to minimize disruption .
“ As AI technologies evolve , predictive maintenance will become even more powerful , using better realtime data to reduce the need for manual intervention and ensure factories remain operational and efficient .”
5G and manufacturing
“ With more than half of the world ’ s energy being consumed by the industrial sector , there is an urgent need to double the efficiency of factories around the globe .
