Beyond 20 / 20: A Lifetime Journey Through Refractive and Cataract Surgery Innovation
Raymond Stein, MD, FRCSC, Medical Director of the Bochner Eye Institute and Professor of Ophthalmology and Vision Sciences at the University of Toronto, who is also Dr. Harold Stein’ s son, will present this historic legacy address. With more than 200,000 successful eye surgeries performed, Dr. Stein has established himself as an expert and pioneer in refractive and implant surgery.
He is a highly respected ophthalmologist and has been honored with numerous awards, including the prestigious‘ Honour Award’ from the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Contact Lens Association of America, along with the‘ Innovators Award’ from the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. Dr. Stein has served as President of the Canadian Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and the Chief of Ophthalmology at the Scarborough Hospital in Toronto as well as the chief eye surgeon for the W Network’ s Style by Jury. Dr. Stein completed a medical degree at the University of Toronto Medical School and continued his residency at the world-renowned Mayo Clinic, followed by a cornea and external diseases fellowship at Wills Eye Hospital, Philadelphia.
This presentation will provide a personal perspective on the evolution of vision correction and highlight innovative technologies that are reshaping contemporary practice. He will address the development of modern laser vision correction, culminating in the introduction of Ray Tracing LASIK, a highly individualized treatment approach that integrates ocular tomography, wavefront analysis, axial length measurements, and line-of-sight centration to achieve unprecedented visual precision.
Dr. Stein will present advances and the surgical technique in corneal therapeutics, including Bochner Precision Corneal Crosslinking™, the growing role of femtosecond laser technology and the“ Zero-Phaco” cataract surgery, as well as Light Adjustable Lens( LAL) technology and options. Dr. Stein will present a novel corneal procedure, RestoRx, for age-related macular degeneration, which redirects light to functioning macular cells outside of a central scotoma to enhance vision. This emerging technology represents a promising new approach to visual rehabilitation for patients with central vision loss.
Attendees will gain insight into how technological innovation continues to improve safety, precision, and visual outcomes for patients. Clinical outcomes and lessons learned from early North American experience will highlight Dr. Stein’ s talk and the advances driving the transition from standardized treatment approaches to highly personalized vision correction.
Dr. Raymond Stein is committed to providing high-quality care, including cataract surgery, refractive lens exchange, LASIK, PRK, keratoconus treatment, and implantable contact lenses for patients with a variety of ophthalmologic needs. He offers a number of sophisticated refractive surgery procedures at Bochner Eye Institute utilizing the latest technologies and techniques.
