Presented by Carol L . Shields , MD
Dr . Carol Shields is a world-renowned ocular oncologist at Wills Eye Hospital where she serves as Director of the Oncology Service and Professor of Ophthalmology at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia . Her lecture will cover leading-edge research , developments , and treatments of intraocular tumors , uveal melanoma , uveal metastasis , and retinoblastoma . She will include commentary on what one of her mentors , Harold A . Stein , MD , would do !
Dr . Shields ’ s presentation on uveal melanoma will discuss its origins , how to assess if a choroidal nevus is at risk for becoming a melanoma ( with a mnemonic for remembering it ), the importance of the BAP-1 germline mutation and the risk it poses for uveal melanoma , and the ideal uveal melanoma therapy . She will also discuss new systemic therapies that are on the horizon , including some that may assist in preventing metastatic disease — which would be a game-changing discovery . In her discussion on uveal metastasis , she will provide important insights regarding the spread of primary cancers to the eye , the age group and sex at greatest risk , and outcomes based on timing of metastasis .
Dr . Shields will also discuss treatment of retinoblastoma with intravenous , intra-arterial , intravitreal , and intra-aqueous chemotherapy , and how it controls retinoblastoma growth in both the short and long-term . She will discuss strategies for avoiding chemotherapy-related problems .
Dr . Stein was a mentor whom Dr . Shields looked up to during her career . She describes him as a brilliant , kind , warm , and generous human being whom she has had the opportunity to meet several

times . She admired how Dr . Stein rose from humble beginnings and overcame many challenges during his illustrious career . In her presentation , Dr . Shields will honor Dr . Stein with a special case and deliver some of his famous quotes that spurred ophthalmic discovery and forged his legacy .
Dr . Shields completed her residency in ophthalmology at the Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia ( 1987 ) and did fellowship training in ocular oncology , oculoplastic surgery , and ophthalmic pathology . She is a member of numerous ocular oncology , pathology , and retina societies , and has delivered 74 named lectures around the world . She has authored and co-authored 12 textbooks , 341 chapters in edited textbooks , over 2000 articles in major peerreviewed journals , and given over 1000 lectures . She serves on the editorial and advisory boards of 33 journals . Her Google Scholar H-index is 122 and her Scopus H-index is 93 .
She has received many awards as the “ first woman to receive this award ,” with the most recent being the World Eye-Con 21st Century Award in Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences . She was nominated by the Asia Pacific Society of Ophthalmology and the Asia Pacific Journal of Ophthalmology ( APJO ) for this award .
Dr . Shields is well respected by her peers , having been nominated to The Ophthalmologist ’ s “ Ophthalmology Power List ” as one of the top 100 leaders in ophthalmology . She also received the “ Icons in Ophthalmology ” award in 2020 , given to the “ Top 5 Ophthalmologists ” worldwide .
Her impressive CV showcases talents well beyond ophthalmology ! She was on Notre Dame ’ s women ’ s basketball team in 1975 and was named co-captain of the team three times . She was the first woman to receive Notre Dame ’ s Byron V . Kanaley Award for excellence in athletics and academics and was inducted into the Academic All- American Hall of Fame in 2011 for lifetime success in her athleticism as well as her career . She received the “ Theodore Roosevelt Award ” ( 2023 ), the highest honor the National Collegiate Athletic Association ( NCAA ) confers on an individual who earned a varsity letter for sports in college and who became a distinguished citizen of national reputation . Dr . Shields states that sports played a major role in her ability to handle all the challenges of being a doctor .
She and her husband , Jerry , have seven children , ranging in age from 22 to 34 years old .

The Harold A . Stein , MD Lecture
This year marks the 22 nd Annual Harold A . Stein , MD Lecture , in honor of Harold A . Stein , MD , FRCSC . The JCAHPO Education and Research Foundation established the Harold A . Stein , MD , FRCSC , Endowed Lectureship in 2000 .
Dr . Stein was instrumental in organizing the first Plenary ( Keynote ) Session held in San Francisco , CA , in 1985 . He served as IJCAHPO ’ s President from 1986 – 1987 , and Commissioner from 1972 – 1992 . In 1968 , Dr . Stein wrote the textbook , The Ophthalmic Assistant , which is in its 11 th edition .
The book sale proceeds are generously donated to the Foundation to support technician education and certification .
Dr . Stein was a co-founder of The Bochner Eye Institute in Toronto where he resided with his wife , Anne . After many years of a prestigious career , Dr . Stein passed away in January 2021 .
