A Landscape Rich in
Pattern & Texture
PE
In designed parks and gardens, patterns were used within the landscape as an
accent to spark interest. The majority of patterns employed geometric designs such
as parterre gardens or through symmetrical planting along promenades for example.
Textures were used far more subtly. Textures often denoted points of arrival such as
the use of gravel driveways as one entered the estate.
Flowing geometry - wide sweeping routes through Horwood Hall seek to lead people
through the landscape whilst linking them to the Hub. The Hub itself straddles one of
these routes. A stair and lift within The Hub enable pedestrians to move freely along
this route whilst also negotiating a change in level.

A diamond pattern is to be used within the planting, paving and landscape features.
This pattern will be used at key junctions, building entrances or as focal points within
the landscape.
The landscape will use materials with different textures such as paving, boardwalks,
gravel etc, in order to subtly help people orientate themselves. These textures will
also help to differentiate between a route to and from The Hub, or a link between the
Heart of the Campus and the Development Zone, for example.
