Welcome to our exhibition of the
Keele University Accommodation
Enhancement and Expansion project.
We are pleased to continue to involve students, staff and the
local community in the design of these developments as they
continue to evolve prior to submitting planning applications in
November.
Representatives from both the University and the University
Partnerships Programme (UPP) are on hand to discuss how
the design has changed since our events in May and update
in August, and to answer any questions you may have. Please
take as much time as you need to look through the exhibition
and discuss the proposals with members of our team.
Your comments will be recorded in our Statement of Community
Engagement which will be submitted to Newcastle Borough
Council as part of the planning applications. Once plans
have been submitted, the Council will undertake a statutory
consultation with stakeholders and the local community. Here
you will have the opportunity to make comments directly to
the Council.

Background
Our Proposals
Keele University has been working with a specialist
accommodation provider – UPP – to bring forward proposals
to enhance and develop the accommodation on campus.
This builds on the £140 million investment in the campus
and infrastructure over the last decade, including the current
development of additional student bedrooms at Barnes Hall of
Residence which will be delivered for winter 2017/18.
Our proposals have been developed in response to feedback
from our events in May and update in August of this year. This
exhibition shows the construction of:
• Approximately 2,300 new high-quality, affordable rooms and
the demolition of approximately 900 rooms that are beyond
their usable life;
• A new social hub in each hall;
Why Now?
Keele University is one of the fastest growing universities in the
UK with an increasing number of domestic and international
applicants each year. The finished project will allow us to
respond to the growing desire for places at Keele University
and to provide students with accommodation that reflects their
needs.
The project will deliver a range of accommodation choices for
students, including cluster flat accommodation with en-suite
bedrooms and townhouses with shared facilities.
• A new dedicated postgraduate hub to replace the existing
Keele Postgraduate Association (KPA) clubhouse;
• A new music and teaching facility;
• A new, larger medical centre with dedicated parking spaces
to replace the existing GP facilities.
These redevelopments will take place at Horwood, Lindsay,
Barnes, Holly Cross and Oaks Halls and will be phased over
the next 4 to 5 years. This will take the total accommodation
on campus to circa 4,200 rooms distributed across four halls.
University Partnerships Programme
By investing further in exceptional infrastructure that enhances
the nature of the campus and promotes sustainable living,
the University will build on its market leading position as the
provider of the country’s number one student experience.
University Partnerships Programme (UPP) has worked with the
University on the scoping of this project to date. Established
in 1998, UPP has a strong track record of developing and
operating student accommodation with over 30,000 rooms in
partnership with 14 universities across the country.
