When a crowd gathers, its effects are more than the sum of its parts.
But sometimes, a festival can change the world forever.
This month, the creative minds behind Woodstock, Burning Man,
Glastonbury, Sundance, Essence and Shambala discuss the impact
their festivals have had on the culture, revolutionising how we think
about everything from sustainability and self-reliance to black
empowerment and film.
These festivals have become verbs in their own right, changing
how the event industry approaches its own offerings. Indeed, the
gathering of these festival stalwarts was made possible by FestForums
(the ‘Sundance’ for the festival industry?), held in Santa Barbara in
November, and this issue is indebted to similar industry gatherings.
Access took further inspiration from the Association of Independent
Festival’s Congress event (p32) and the NTIA’s Ambassadors of the
Night Awards (p24) recently, where industry leaders aired concerns
about the collective responsibility that we also strive to give a voice to
in this title on a monthly basis.
Of course, there are more sector celebrations coming up in 2020.
Access’ 30 Under 30 will praise the work of the younger generation
on 16 January, the Event Production Show will unite the organiser and
supplier elite on 25-26 February, and the Event Production Awards will
place crowns on the heads of those changing the production landscape
on 5 March.
So join us in celebrating the festivals that have changed our lives,
and the industry events that continue to improve these festivals.
