Spring is in the air , the days are lengthening , and a busy summer of events is fast approaching . There will be no shortage of outdoor action as the temperature rises . Aside from the Paris Olympics and UEFA EURO 2024 tournament in Germany , London will host the UEFA Champions League Final , and stadiums across the UK will be busy with shows by acts including Taylor Swift , Foo Fighters , P ! nk and Bruce Springsteen .
Many of Europe ’ s major festivals are well set for a summer of success , with huge events across Europe selling out in minutes , including Glastonbury ( 210,000 ), Tomorrowland ( 70,000 ) and Lowlands ( 65,000 ). Meanwhile , many smaller festivals will not make it that far . In the UK alone 2023 saw 36 festivals close , and nine have followed suit already this year . On page 19 , we take an in-depth look at the issues facing festival operators across Europe .
The challenges impacting event operators and production teams will be thoroughly explored during the opening session of the mainstage Event Production Show ( EPS ) conference . The opening , ‘ Pain Killers ’, session will see leading event operators including Boomtown head of production Lana Elsworthy and WeGroup CEO Nick Morgan discuss the key pain points and what is required to resolve them .
Having overseen the creation of the 10-session conference , I ’ m really looking forward to seeing many of you there . Come and say hello , and hear from a great line-up of nearly 50 speakers including Notting Hill Carnival director Mathew Phillip , London Marathon Events director Hugh Brasher , VisitScotland director of events Paul Bush OBE , Edinburgh International Festival director of audiences Kate Carter and AEG Global Partnerships executive VP Paul Samuels . More details can be found on page 32 .
Once you have explored what ’ s in store at EPS , turn to page 53 for the remarkable story of Eat To The Beat . Marking the company ’ s 40th anniversary , the piece charts its rise from a operating out of a household garage to becoming a global catering operation feeding everyone from the Rolling Stones to the Dali Lama .
