The heavier price

Knowing your event is sustainable is one thing but for attendees to recognise that as well speaks volumes , says ID & C

Eco “ alternatives ” are no longer the alternate , we are seeing an increase in the request for eco and sustainable products . We all feel the dutifulness to improve sustainability , but what prevents event organisers from making eco choices ? Is it cost ?

In the effort to regain revenue lost from the pandemic , event providers are running more events this year ; some running the same events over multiple weekends . With this growth will come more requirements for event sustainability , especially if they are here to stay . It is very much at the top of the agenda for live music and sports events providers .
Event planners are challenged with trimming the fat through the event ’ s supply chain . From composted food waste , sustainable cutlery , water bottle filling stations , zero single-use plastic , paperless ticketing , LED lighting , promoting car shares and public transport to renewable energy , each initiative is valid and at the crux of embracing sustainability in the events
industry . More Than Music ’ s recent report details that two thirds of attendees feel it is the provider ’ s duty to reduce , reuse and recycle their waste , and half of millennials think the primary objective of a business should be to have a positive contribution to society – both socially and environmentally .
Event goers take their memories home long after an event . But what about the waste they produce during an event ? Lanyards and wristbands are often seen as keepsakes , with many choosing to keep theirs for years to come . But for those that feel their memories are enough , how can we encourage event goers to recycle ? Eco-friendly wristbands and lanyards are a fantastic way to promote sustainability in the events industry during the first point of contact when entering . If the right message and enough education provided , the culture will undergo a cosmic shift . And it is already starting . At Glastonbury this year , an incredible 99.3 % of tents were taken home . Latitude ’ s family site was left spotless post-festival . Everybody has a part to play .
We are seeing an almighty shift in event goers ’ desire to reuse , recycle and lessen waste , and many event
organisers have this front of mind too . Our eco ranges from both ID & C and identilam have increased rapidly since 2019 . We are in the process of pulling event waste into the recycling stream for our products and we look forward to sharing our initiatives and product developments in due course . We also want to dispel the myth that eco-friendly event accreditation is more expensive when you look at
the circular economy of an event . Can you put a tangible price on added value , return against recycling investment , plus the offering and message you send to an event goer ? So , we believe the answer is no , it is not the price , it is the education . Knowing your event is sustainable is one thing but for attendees to recognise that as well speaks volumes and can enrich potential returns .
