Whether it is relentless record-breaking temperatures leading to major issues worldwide – including an area the size of Thailand being lost to forest fires last year – or the news that 32 % of all plastic packaging produced finds its way to our oceans , only the most blinkered can be oblivious to the fact that unless we act now our planet is heading toward an environmental catastrophe .
The live entertainment industry has a huge environmental footprint . UK music camping festivals alone create more than 24,000 tonnes of CO2 every year , add in cultural events , tours and major sporting events and the challenge is clearly a huge one .
Thankfully , the environmental impact of our industry is being taken increasingly seriously and considerable actions are being taken to reduce it . This issue of AAA is dedicated to highlighting that work , the initiatives , tools , services , products and organisations out there to help organisers make real progress toward greener events .
Operators of mass participation events are not only well placed to make changes to the way they are staged but use them as a platform to influence audience behaviour and help change society for the better .
In this issue we hear from sustainability experts including Vision : 2025 ’ s Chris Johnson ( P10 ), Live Nation ’ s Vikki Chapman ( P12 ) and Chiara Badiali from Julie ’ s Bicycle who outlines the free environmental tools available to operators of events of all scales ( P22 ).
Glastonbury Festival ’ s strategic sustainability lead and Live Nation ’ s Green Nation special advisor Luke Howell has been leading the pioneering work on Coldplay ’ s current tour . He takes us behind the scenes to reveal whether the band ’ s goal of cutting its tour emissions by 50 % is on track ( P16 ).
There are countless other sustainability products , services , experts and initiatives highlighted in what is , fittingly , the biggest issue of AAA for some time .
I hope you enjoy it .
