Single-use plastic at events in the UK is a big problem , more than 100 million plastic cups are used every year at UK festivals and live events , and most of these are incinerated or sent to landfill . Thankfully , there is a growing number of affordable and accessible reusable cup schemes available along with a newly published ‘ how-to ’ guide
Based on research with event organisers and councils , environmental not-forprofit City to Sea has launched a ‘ how-to ’ guide to assist with the introduction of reusable cup initiatives . Solutions On Tap – a guide to reducing waste and introducing reusable cup schemes at events addresses the challenges involved and identifies the opportunities for change .
The new guide for indoor and outdoor events of all sizes offers practical guidance around buying or hiring , deposits or levies , branding or unbranded and where to wash . It is supported with a dedicated online hub for event organisers and councils , which includes a cup carbon and wastesaving calculator .
Having involved input from event industry professionals and forward-thinking councils , the guide and web hub identify where councils and event providers can drive change . Measures
already being implemented include providing guidance during the event application process and providing a stock of cups for local events . Examples include Litterfree Dorset , which has a supply of 500 cups for small events , and Manchester City Council ( MCC ) which has been providing reusable cups to traders at their Christmas markets for 15 years .
MCC sustainability project manager Helen Harland says , “ Through delivery of our own events and working with other organisers , we ’ ve heard a lot of questions when considering reusables , so guides like this really help to give organisers the confidence and knowledge to take action .”
