inject into the local economy.
“As the grand prix and the
festival are so renowned, I
feel that businesses already
think that the events are
well supported, but this is
absolutely not the case and we’re
almost entirely dependent on
sponsorship.
“The whole event is organised
by a small team of three,
including myself working
alongside two others, so there is
no big budget to fall back on.
“Every year we just scrape
enough budget to host the
Grand Prix but, as was
demonstrated this year, we must
cancel other festival events if we
can’t raise enough sponsorship,
which is hugely disappointing to
everyone involved.”
BARRIER FOR BARRIERS
Furious revellers have claimed
the Lambeth Country Show was
“destroyed” when the council

erected a perimeter fence
around the event for the first
time in 44 years.
The two-metre high metal
wall was put up in Brockwell
Park, Brixton, following
concerns from authorities.
Security bag checks were
introduced meaning fair-goers
were banned from taking their
own alcohol into the free event.
Outraged attendees claimed
the new regulations had

The council said on Friday
that the fence was designed to
“ensure public safety” and would
not “impact on the enjoyment of
the event”.
They added that it was
necessary for insurance
purposes and said alcohol had
never been allowed on the site.
The Lambeth Country Show
is thought to have welcomed
150,000 people from Brixton
and across London over the
weekend. It will feature live
HSE ON BARRIERS
Choosing the right barriers
necessitates some advice from
HSE. The factors you should take
into account include:
• The planned use of barriers
• Layout
• Ground conditions and
topography
• The presence of underground
services, eg water pipes,
electric cables that could
restrict the use of pins to
secure barriers
• Weather
• Load on the barrier – wind
and/or crowd pressure
• Visitor numbers and
behaviour
