As the UK prepares to welcome world leaders to the UN Climate Change Conference , COP26 , it is fitting that the live events industry has pledged to reach net zero emissions by the year 2030 .
All 13 industry associations that make up LIVE , including the Association of Independent Festivals and the Concert Promoters Association , have signed up to the Beyond Zero Declaration ( p29 ) at a time when the festival industry ’ s full-capacity return has been marred by high-profile coverage of their environmental impact .
Images and footage of the horrifying sea of plastic debris at sites around the country ( p30 ) are an embarrassment to festival-goers but also the industry . In this month ’ s cover feature we explore what is being done to tackle the issue . There are no shortages of ideas as to how the sector can help reduce the environmental impact of events . On p17 , Jon Sinigaglia suggests introducing a small levy on event budgets to help fund initiatives . Steps are being taken across the industry , whether it be Commonwealth Games ( p36 ) organisers aiming for a carbon-neutral event or Goodwood Revival ’ s ( p22 ) environmental impact being reduced , while visitors are encouraged to cherish possessions via its Revive and Thrive theme .
It is hugely encouraging to see an industry , which continues to battle with major pandemic and Brexit-related challenges , take real action to protect the one thing we all share – our planet .
