The introduction of the vaccine passport scheme in Scotland has been an “ unmitigated disaster ”, according to the Scottish Hospitality Group ( SHG ).
The hospitality sector body said that some venues had seen attendance levels down 40 %, with staff experiencing “ intolerable levels of abuse ”.
The scheme , which requires people attending a range of late night venues and larger indoor and outdoor live events , such as music festivals or large sporting events , to show staff proof they are fully vaccinated or are otherwise exempt in order to gain entry , was launched on 1 October but was not enforced until 18 October .
During the opening weekend of the scheme ’ s enforcement , SHG said venues had reported more than 500 instances of customers being turned away due to not having the necessary documentation , that there was a “ concerning number of reports of abuse of hospitality staff ” and that some venues felt it necessary to close early . Venues also reported experiencing problems with the NHS Scotland Covid Status App .
SHG spokesperson Stephen Montgomery said , “ The Scottish hospitality industry as a whole , has paid enough for government failures in this pandemic , and it ’ s time the Scottish Government scrapped this scheme altogether .”
Health secretary Humza Yousaf said , “ The grace period allowed venues and businesses affected more than two weeks to test the scheme in practice and make suitable arrangements . It has also provided the Government with helpful feedback from the sectors affected and we continue to liaise with them going forward .”

Second Camp Bestival to be launched next year on new Shropshire site
Camp Bestival founders Rob Da Bank and wife Josie are to launch a second 30,000-capacity festival in Shropshire next year . The Live Nation-owned , family-orientated , festival will take place in Weston Park on 18-21 August three weeks after Camp Bestival .
Rob Da Bank ( aka Robert Gorham ) told Access that although the stages , tents , zones and all creative aspects of the original Camp Bestival will be rolled out at both events , the festivals will feature some different headline acts and entertainment offerings .
He said one of the main reasons for the move was that Camp Bestival ’ s existing catchment area runs up to Birmingham but the event attracts a lot of interest from festivalgoers further north .

Sustainable events specialist UMA Entertainment ( UMAE ) is to host a not-forprofit event combining live performances and conference sessions , with climate experts , at COP26 in Glasgow on 6 November .
UMAE , which is chaired by Live Aid promoter Harvey Goldsmith , is working on the event with partners including Bluedot Festival , Julie ’ s Bicycle , LIVE Green , PRS and PPL .
It will involve a day of panels from climate experts and thought leaders across NGOs , youth activism , music and the entertainment industry . Among the speakers will be A Greener Festival director Teresa Moore ,
Beggars Group head of sustainability Will Hutton , Tyndall Centre deputy director Professor Carly McLachlan and Groove Armada ’ s Andy Cato . Performers will include Aurora , Sam
Fischer and BEMZ . Profits from the event will be donated to charity EarthPercent . Founded by Brian Eno , it provides grants to organisations working on the climate crisis . Organisers said donations will also be made to social impact charities in Glasgow .
