Where birds chirped, clouds rolled overhead and there were actual, discernible days of the week? No…me neither. For those of you who haven’t already met me, my name is Stuart – and I’ve taken on the strange task of editing a magazine about outdoor events at a time when no one can go outside. We’re all well acquainted with lockdown at this point, and while it does have some benefits (my commute has gone from 80 minutes to five seconds, for starters), it is also having a catastrophic impact on our industry. Many companies are struggling, and the threat that the entire outdoor events season will be cancelled gets bigger every day. Across this issue, we’ve profiled some of the various solutions that have been proposed to the uncertain future of events. Some have taken a bold leap into the virtual world, such as the eccentric Burning Man (see p30- 31). Others have cut their losses early and cancelled (see p8-9). But many more have opted for postponement, and are now scheduled for an increasingly busy Autumn. In our cover feature, we examine the challenges of extending the festival season, and what companies need to do to survive it (p22-25). Before we close, I’d like to thank my good friend and former Editor Tom Hall. If you want to get in touch, email me at swood@mashmedia. net Enjoy the issue!
