MARCH | REVIEW The right vision Indigo Television pulled out a few surprises for The National Television Awards on its 25th outing F irst broadcast in 1995, The National Television Awards is known as ‘television’s biggest night of the year’ but maintaining such a billing has required an element of surprise. This year, a new host, David Walliams took to the stage, following in the footsteps of Dermot O’Leary – the host since the event moved to The O2 in 2010 – and Sir Trevor McDonald, who was responsible for previous hosting duties. “This year was massive, as it is every year, but as it was the 25th anniversary we scheduled a lot of nostalgic set pieces, like having Sir Trevor McDonald on stage,“ said Indigo Television event producer Robyn-Marie Towle. As such, the invite list was paramount. “Indigo Television has a team dedicated to this. We were delighted to have special guests for two awards this time, Special Recognition for Sir Michael Palin and the cast of Gavin and Stacey for the Impact Award.” On the day, Towle – who has been at Indigo for five years, and prior to that has always worked in events – took on ample responsibilities in her multi-varied role. “I went into the Arena at 6AM and left at 3.30am the next day, looking after everything NTAs-related. I look after a multitude of things, sponsorship and partners, tickets sales, the red carpet, the social media marketing team and nominees receptions..” 36 On 28 January, when the event took place, Towle’s day was a masterclass in organisation. “Every five minutes is scheduled in, then a lot of it is very adhoc, getting pulled away to do things as they happen,” she tells Access. It was, of course, helped along by The O2’s in-house staff: “TThe O2 are fabulous to work with, they know their venue inside out, are totally professional, their team is outstanding, and nothing is too much trouble. “The feedback has been amazing, everyone enjoyed the show, we’re still going through it, but certainly everyone was very happy.” Suppliers list: • • • • • Edition 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th 7th 8th 9th 10th 11th 12th 13th 14th 15th 16th 17th 18th 19th 20th 21st 22nd 23rd 24th 25th Date 30 August 1995 9 October 1996 8 October 1997 27 October 1998 26 October 1999 10 October 2000 23 October 2001 15 October 2002 28 October 2003 26 October 2004 25 October 2005 31 October 2006 31 October 2007 29 October 2008 20 January 2010 26 January 2011 25 January 2012 23 January 2013 22 January 2014 21 January 2015 20 January 2016 25 January 2017 23 January 2018 22 January 2019 28 January 2020 Arena Seating Blackout CTV GIG Mojo • • • • • Newman’s Displays PRG Lighting Propeller SHOP Stufish Venue Wembley Conference Centre Royal Albert Hall Presenter Eamonn Holmes Trevor McDonald The O2 Arena Dermot O’Leary David Walliams
