Indigo Television pulled out a
few surprises for The National
Television Awards on its 25th
outing
F
irst broadcast in 1995, The
National Television Awards is
known as ‘television’s biggest
night of the year’ but maintaining such
a billing has required an element of
surprise.
This year, a new host, David Walliams
took to the stage, following in the
footsteps of Dermot O’Leary – the host
since the event moved to The O2 in 2010
– and Sir Trevor McDonald, who was
responsible for previous hosting duties.
“This year was massive, as it is every
year, but as it was the 25th anniversary
we scheduled a lot of nostalgic set
pieces, like having Sir Trevor McDonald
on stage,“ said Indigo Television event
producer Robyn-Marie Towle. As such,
the invite list was paramount. “Indigo
Television has a team dedicated to
this. We were delighted to have special
guests for two awards this time, Special
Recognition for Sir Michael Palin and
the cast of Gavin and Stacey for the
Impact Award.”
On the day, Towle – who has been
at Indigo for five years, and prior to
that has always worked in events –
took on ample responsibilities in her
multi-varied role. “I went into the
Arena at 6AM and left at 3.30am the
next day, looking after everything
NTAs-related. I look after a multitude
of things, sponsorship and partners,
tickets sales, the red carpet, the social
media marketing team and nominees
receptions..”

On 28 January, when the event took
place, Towle’s day was a masterclass
in organisation. “Every five minutes
is scheduled in, then a lot of it is very
adhoc, getting pulled away to do things
as they happen,” she tells Access.
It was, of course, helped along by
The O2’s in-house staff: “TThe O2
are fabulous to work with, they know
their venue inside out, are totally
professional, their team is outstanding,
and nothing is too much trouble.
“The feedback has been amazing,
everyone enjoyed the show, we’re still
going through it, but certainly everyone
was very happy.”
