FEBRUARY | SECTOR FOCUS buildings for film studios or temporary venues. They are modular in nature and can go from 10,000sqft to 100,000 and are engineering to a level more akin to a permanent building than a stage, so we were very proud erecting the first of them last year. 2019 was a great year for Serious Stages. Celebrating 35 providing stages to outdoor events in the spring lead into starting the summer with working with two clients in the BBC at their Big Weekend and onto the Glastonbury for a glorious weekend. From there- on-in we were flat out working on an incredible range of festivals across the UK & Ireland until the end of September. What demands are clients placing on you? Our clients have strong visions for their events – which is why a lot of them have been so successful so long. They guide our direction when it comes to new products, geared around their ideas. It’s up to us to design, manufacture and then deliver the stages and structures on site. It’s up to us to help organisers improve the experience for their audiences and artists and deliver stages that can accommodate the ever increasing technical and scenic elements artists want to bring to festivals or on the road. We are particularly proactive in looking at our approach to sustainability. Last year staff had steel reusable water bottles and drinking points were installed at the stage build phase. We also instigated our own tree planting scheme. What new innovations are improving your offering? Last year we introduced a new front-of-house tower design. This was a steel frame four storey structure designed and manufactured by us in response to a specific request by Festival Republic and was used at several of their festivals. They wanted a F.O.H. tower that could carry a large curved video screen to relay the live camera footage to the extended audience in a large festival arena. It also had a VIP top floor platform, so access had to be easier than for working professionals.
