Last year, the operation processed 556.418 tonnes of waste, with 97 % recycled and a further 3 % recovered, meaning none was sent to landfill.
“ FOR US, IT’ S ONE OPERATION WITH THE SAME END GOAL. WE WORK AS ONE TEAM WITH WASTE BALING MACHINES AND COLLARDS, AND THAT COOPERATION HAS TO BE SEAMLESS. WHEN ONE PART OF THE OPERATION MOVES, THE REST HAS TO MOVE WITH IT.”
Aisling Ryan, CEO, Ryans Cleaning
Daily meetings between Ryans Cleaning and Boomtown’ s site management keep everyone updated on progress, changes and any issues throughout the build, live event and post-event clean.
WORKING THROUGH THE CONDITIONS
Event cleaning rarely comes with predictable conditions.
This year, Boomtown experienced temperatures of approximately 35 to 37 ° C during the live event.
For crews working long shifts outdoors, that meant adapting the operation to make sure people could work safely. Additional breaks were taken in shaded areas and staff had constant access to drinking water throughout their shifts.
The cleaning operation still had to continue, with bins serviced, litter picked and crews moving between locations throughout the day, but staff welfare

remained part of the planning rather than an afterthought.
Moving people and equipment across a site of this scale also requires its own logistics operation. Ryans Cleaning uses caged trucks, John Deere 4x4s, bin trucks, RoRo and skip trucks, trailers and nine-seater minibuses to move teams between different parts of the site.
FROM FIRST ARRIVAL TO FINAL CLEAN
The same core operation remains in place from the first build activity through to the end of the post-event clean.
Crew numbers increase steadily towards the four live days, remain high for the initial post-event clean and then reduce as areas of the site are completed. By the final week, only a small team remains to finish the job.
After three years at Boomtown, what stands out is how much an operation like this depends on people knowing the job and knowing each other. The site changes, the conditions change and no two event days are exactly the same, but having the right people involved from the beginning makes a real difference.
We’ ve been working in live events for more than 40 years, so we know how unpredictable these environments can be. Decades of experience have taught us how to adapt quickly and keep an operation moving in all kinds of conditions, which is invaluable on a contract of this scale.
Many of the team planning the job are the same people delivering it on the ground, and many return year after year. For Ryans Cleaning, that continuity is what allows a complex operation to feel straightforward on site. When the festival is running and the cleaning operation is doing its job properly, most people will never need to think about what is happening behind the scenes. That is exactly how it should be.
