 Much to celebrate
From seeing PJ Harvey perform on a stage built into Lake Geneva to watching Olympic athletes compete in a temporary arena in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower at sunset , and seeing Glastonbury ’ s dazzling Arcadia being powered entirely by a 3MWh battery – it ’ s been a summer I ’ ll not forget any time soon .
It ’ s clearly not possible to cover all the stunning productions , innovations and landmark moments created this summer by our world-leading event professionals , but in this issue we celebrate a fair few of them . However , as my nephew likes to say , ‘ It ’ s not all pies and rainbows ’. Having burned down the main stage at Secret Garden Party to close the final edition of the long-running festival , its founder Freddie Fellowes outlines the important role of independent festivals and what is behind their demise ( p . 11 ). We also hear from Black Lives in Music CEO Dr . Charisse Beaumont ( p . 15 ), who outlines the serious barriers facing many Black , Asian and ethnic minority promoters . Of course , the biggest event of the summer was Paris 2024 . On page 18 , we hear from the key teams who overcame countless challenges to create an enormous and hugely impressive network of temporary infrastructure interlaced with Paris ’ striking historic landmarks .
There has certainly been a lot to celebrate at LS Events , as the multiservice event production agency reaches its 20th birthday at a time when it is enjoying considerable growth . In an eightpage special feature ( p . 26 ), we explore LS Events ’ journey from Creamfields to Operation London Bridge and beyond .
Since the establishment of the General Entertainment Authority and launch of the Vision 2030 initiative , the Saudi
Arabian government has worked hard to reinvent the country ’ s image as a hub of live entertainment , with countless eye-wateringly expensive and complex productions staged and venues built . We explore the key challenges and opportunities involved in working there for UK-based companies ( p . 41 ).
We will soon be announcing the line-up of great speakers for the AAA Conference & Awards , which will be held on 5 December at London ’ s Indigo at The O2 . Handling the catering for the Awards will be Moving Venue . To whet your appetite , take a look at the report from Moving Venue ’ s anniversary event at the Natural History Museum ( p . 52 ). Having catered for everyone from Michael Jackson to Tony Blair , and Queen Elizabeth II to Bill Gates , it ’ s fair to say you can expect great things from their team . I hope to see every single one of you there ! Enjoy the issue .
