What a summer ! There was glorious weather for another sold-out Glastonbury , huge excitement and positive sales and reviews for the many other landmark festivals including Boomtown and Green Man , record attendance levels at events such as the British Grand Prix , huge new projects launched including the UCI Cycling World Championships , along with other key moments like Burna Boy becoming the first African artist to headline a stadium show in the UK . In London alone , more than one million people attended live music events in the first week of July , following 300,000 having attended Manchester music shows in just one June weekend . Congratulations to everyone involved .
There remains huge challenges , not least for small independent festivals , but having seen fewer fans purchasing tickets following the pandemic , compounded by the cost-of-living crisis , the industry is seeing an increase in ticket sales and attendance .
With an uplift in attendance and event numbers comes increased environmental impact . In this issue we hear from leading industry figures about their efforts to produce shows more sustainably . Glastonbury ’ s Emily Eavis ( p13 ), AEG Europe ’ s first director of sustainability Sam Booth ( p20 ), Wimbledon Championships sustainability manager Hattie Park ( p37 ) and Shambala festival co-founder and sustainability lead Chris Johnson ( p40 ) all provide valuable insight .
We also hear from individuals and organisations about their work to help event professionals cope with the impact of the high pressure , long hours , and unnatural sleep patterns that come with working on live events ( p47 ). On page 53 , we focus on the work being done to create and support a new and truly diverse wave of young event professionals .
As Kilimanjaro Live celebrates its 15th anniversary in style on the back of a record year that saw it achieve £ 100 million in turnover across an increasingly diverse roster of events , we hear from the team that is leading its expansion ( p23 ).
Here ’ s hoping the sales and attendance momentum continues across the industry as we work to make it more sustainable for people and planet .
