APRIL | TECH Public safety One of the many concerns for organisers is how safe their attendees are. Training staff in public safety practices is something the industry does very well. However, putting staff into real-life scenarios and to train them in dealing with extreme situations is something that cannot be replicated in the training room. Or can it? Let’s look at Haptics. Haptic technology is a wearable item that simulates the senses of touch and motion. Haptic technology can be used to reproduce – through simulation - the sensations that would be felt by a user interacting directly with physical objects. This is where training in all sorts of live situations is going to go in the 21st Century. We have already seen VR and AR used for training. This is the next level. Combining haptics with VR and AR to create simulated public safety scenarios is something brand new. Imagine creating a football riot in virtual reality and then using a wearable device to train public safety officials. Teslasuit is the item that is going to revolutionise training in this area. Though VR or AR we can place trainees in all What’s hot? Words: James Morgan, founder, Event Tech Lab sort of radical scenarios. The suit comes into its own by using galvanic skin sensors to measure stress in training. The suit also uses motion sensors to make analysis of how individuals react in the same training scenarios. Performance can be reviewed and compared. Lastly, the haptic feedback trains reflexes. And, knowing the events industry, we won’t stop there in adapting the uses of the Teslasuit. Creative adaptation in using the suit for entertainment purposes is going to be a new way of using technology to engage audiences. Imagine a Halloween experience where the user can feel they are being touched, pushed or thrown about by a monster they can see through the VR headset. The adaptions are boundless. After all, that’s we what do in the industry – create! Teooh With an interactive, avatar-based platform, Teooh is able to capture the atmosphere of in-person events.
