A
month is a long time in events. Last issue we cautiously
celebrated the saplings of industry recognition, and this month
– following a global pandemic – our industry was thrust head-
first into the spotlight, for all the wrong reasons.
With lives at stake, there was no choice but to cancel or postpone
events. But their demise, coupled with that of the night-time economy,
also had a human effect. Suddenly we could no longer connect with
people, our livelihoods, culture, music, and even the surroundings we
took for granted in the same way.
Our industry was profoundly noticeable by its absence, and the
loss of Glastonbury 2020 was a pivotal moment of public outpouring,
reflecting a wider yearning to connect again, felt worldwide.
But, while frustration and sadness are inevitable, we’ve been moved
by the positive actions of our industry: associations came together with
Government to push successfully for much needed financial easing
(supported by Access’ own publisher Mash Media, p17); venues gave up
their spaces for vital services; social media carried powerful plans for
future action and messages of support, while many gave up their spare
time to help others.
The finer details of how the industry is moving forward are outlined
throughout this magazine, which leads with an interview with the UK’s
most celebrated new fashion designer/event visionary Richard Quinn
(p28), conducted in simpler times.
While we navigate an uncertain future, Access hopes the beauty,
technical prowess and innovation of the events in this issue, and in our
back catalogue, will help align our industry constructively now, and
when we come out the other side of this crisis.
