CRITERIA FOR SELECTION
When it comes to selection, there’s indeed no thumb of rule to follow. Each company
has its own practice considering the following factors:
EMBODY
This phase requires each scenario to be analyzed in depth using specific tools, such as
Metaphors, Personas, Story-telling, etc. in order to reinforce and enhance positively, with
• desirability (how attractive it can lead to a person’s course of action)
explicit and applicable ideas, the concepts developed within each scenarios 23.
• feasibility (whether technology is possible to fulfill)
As I will use human-centered design methods to develop the selected scenario, the activity of this phase will not be emphasize, instead, the activity will be exercised during the
• viability (if business can afford to make it a success, considering resources and risks)
following Observation, Analysis, Synthesis and Development phase.
Considering those are future scenarios, no matter it’s a exciting company or a new start
up team, the ability to bear risk are crucial. There are plenty innovation management
frameworks that shows what factors decision making shall consider. I leveraged Alessi’s
Formula of Success framework as it shows not only factor that lever the decision but
also the final risk this decision implies.
According to Alberto Alessi22, the Formula of Success contains four factors: function,
price, sensation/memory/imagination and communication/language. All factors contribute
to consumer’s purchasing journey, from arising their interest to committing to purchase.
These formula represents a good design doesn’t only consider form and function, but
also meaning and language.
Consider this is a startup project aiming to implement scenarios representing new
meanings as well as to be self-sustained, after evaluating each design scenarios based on
this framework, there are two scenarios, LIFESTYLE SKETCHING and FABU-LABS DESIRE selected to proceed with embody step.
