In its current state , the metaverse is still a concept being developed with high amounts of evolution needed in order to create an interconnected virtual world . However , the metaverses available now allow us to preview what an immersive virtual world may look like in the future . As a parallel to the real world , criminals will also exploit this world — and in some cases , have already taken advantage of it . As the metaverse is being built using decentralized technology such as Web3 and blockchain , it will be important for crime analysts to understand underlying emerging technologies and watch for innovative methods criminals will begin employing to commit acts of cybercrime .
There is already an emerging concept being analyzed by leaders in the space , a criminal underground in the metaverse known as the “ darkverse .” For further context , the darkverse can be used to describe the criminal activity occurring on metaverse platforms , including a metaverse dark web with underground marketplaces . The concept of crime in the metaverse differs from typical cybercrimes as the technology allows users to have a pseudo-physical presence , making acts of violence seem real — in some cases leaving lasting psychological effects on victims . We will explore these criminal activities and the related “ cyber gangsters ” running them within this article .
Known crime in the metaverse
Currently , players on some metaverse platforms have complained of gang activity . These gangs attempt to steal avatars and resell them at a higher price . Gangs have also been known to control certain spaces within the virtual worlds by crashing their victim ’ s computer system by targeting the graphics processing unit ( GPU ) settings .
