Academy League Magazine Issue 5 - July / August 2015 | Page 2

We welcome the first issue for the year 2015! Since the last issue, Academy League has been busy in the background, moving premises and forming a new department, Academy League Media. This is where I come in, as the Coordinator of the Media Department, one of my joys of the position is to put forward a magazine that includes all stories that come across my desk.

Graham, our CEO was fortunate enough to travel to the UK and launch the Academy League UK franchise at the Elite Sports Performance Expo last month. He reports the success of his trip.

Graham was lucky enough to bring Jaymee Dudley home on his return to Australia. As we speak with Jaymee, a soccer star from Birmingham, UK, we also invited her high school sidekick, Steph Reid, who is coincidentally here on a break from college basketball in USA. The interview demonstrates two friends who have gone into separate sports on opposites of the globe, and stayed in touch. They both tell us what it takes to be a successful international athlete.

Hockey NSW was happy for Academy League to join in the announcement of their partnership with Toyota, a state raffle that has a $34,483 RAV4 GX up for grabs. 100% of the sales will go back to each club selling tickets, supporting grassroots hockey in NSW.

Winter is my favourite time of the year, apart from disappearing to hit the slopes, the news in community sports is always big. With national netball, AFL and rugby in the background, most of all local community sports are in full tilt. We have stories on a variety of young athletes that train hard within our communities.

One athlete is Danielle Montague, featured in our Superstar files, a talented Australian cricket player that’s now busy in preparations for the National Championships in July.

Another inspirational young athlete which I was lucky enough to interview is Georgia Davey, she will be embarking on an overseas trip representing her club and Life Saving Victoria in Sri Lanka.

One of my biggest ideas for this magazine is not only to promote the rising stars in community sport, but to report in sports that you wouldn’t expect to see in your everyday media. Mel Buttigieg is a prime example, she writes from Victorian Roller Derby League and I did not hesitate to publish her great piece on roller derby, and to my surprise, the Australian All Star team is ranked 5th in the world!!

Australians love their sport and willing to give anything a fair go! Being a nation that thrives on full contact sport like rugby and football, Academy League is a sponsor for the Ladies Gridiron League (LGL). Crystal Lim is a player and writer for Adelaide Phoenix, she gives us an insight into their Head Coach, Andrew Hurcombe as the team prepares for the LGL season.

Lastly, before I forget, don’t miss out on our first instalment of ‘Jo’s Monthly Challenge’. This month we throw her on the back of a thoroughbred racehorse!

Big thankyou to the contributors and horse trainer John Leek and family for making the challenge possible.
