Inside the Warriors' Fortress

The Monash Warriors’ win over the Geelong Buccaneers in the 2014 TGI Friday’s VIC BOWL Championship, saw the team complete a three-peat. Director of Coaching Ralph Maggio gives some answers.

After the final whistle went, the score was there for all to see:

Monash Warriors 32 – Geelong Buccaneers 14.

For the second time in it’s history, the Monash Warriors recorded a three-peat of VIC BOWL Championships.

Following wins over the Buccaneers in 2012 and 2013, this season’s triumph marked the Warriors’ status as one of the elite teams in the Gridiron Victoria League.

With ten titles in the past fourteen seasons, the run of success is down to, as Director of Coaching Ralph Maggio says, consistency.

“We’ve been successful for several reasons,” says Maggio.

“But we have been lucky in a way

because of the consistency of the players

and coaches we’ve had over the years.”

The Director of Coaching is merely being modest. Playing down his influential role at the club, Maggio alongside fellow coaches and board member have worked hard to push the boundaries to ensure that the Warriors are the best team in Victoria.

Working with them for the past ten years in various capacities, from Head Coach of the junior team in his first season to Offensive Coordinator for the Warriors, Maggio is now Director of Coaching.

His role, as he nicely puts it, is to organise the coaching positions and implement the grand scheme of the club’s game plan.

“We've got a dozen different coaches at the moment,” says Maggio.
