Pressure? What Pressure?

Lachlan Dreher has been to the top of his sport, so he knows all about pressure. But he maintains that he plays because he loves it. Andrew Bishara reports.

Every hockey player has a story behind them. Australian legend Barry Dancer used to be a Maths and Science teacher. Current Kookaburras Coach Ric Charlesworth used to play cricket at State level for Western Australia.

And goalkeeper Lachlan Dreher has a story behind him too. At 47 years old, he has been playing hockey for over three decades and for the past several years has returned to the club where he started his career.

“Good bunch of guys to hang around with, good environment and a good club. It’s always been that way, even from when I started off as a junior. It’s about people having fun, it’s also about getting the best out of yourself.”

And the best got him quite far. And it’s brought him back too. His experience and reputation does not precede him

(and Dreher likes it

that way), but he

does not mind being

a leader and teacher.

“I personally don’t

think about it in that

way. They

certainty value my

input in that

defensive area.

How do they see it?

It’s up to them.

“For me, I have a role as goalkeeper, I stand there at the back and run the defence and if all that stuff works well, makes my life easier.”

But, what about the pressure to perform? You see, with someone like Dreher’s experience, reputation and let’s just say it, success, there is an increased expectation that he has to deliver the goods.
