language in the context of literary works. Because the focus of the course is on language and practising literary analysis skills, there is a considerable amount of writing, which also helps students prepare to write the AP English Literature and Composition exam. Assessments include analytical writing assignments, discussions, and focused exam preparation.
ENGLISH: FAQ
Should my daughter read ahead to prepare for the next grade?
Skill development in English is a gradual process, and we do not encourage students to prepare for upcoming years before they are ready. However, we do encourage students to set aside time to read for pleasure and enrichment. The Wade Library in the Senior School maintains an excellent collection in a variety of formats. The teacherlibrarian is happy to provide reading recommendations.
Are there course selections that can best prepare students to succeed in English Studies 12?
No. The English program has been carefully designed to ensure that all of our courses prepare students for success in English Studies 12.
What is required to take AP English Literature and Composition or AP English Language and Composition?
CHS recommends students achieve a proficient standing in their Grade 11 English course prior to taking AP English Literature and Composition. If the student chooses not to take Literary Studies 11 as preparation for the course, then consultation with the students’ Grade 11 teacher about student’ s preparedness is highly recommended.
Is there an opportunity for my child to challenge any of the English courses?
As of this year, students are no longer able to challenge English courses. Our English program is designed as a developmental sequence in which skills are intentionally scaffolded from one grade level to the next. Each course prioritizes process, reflection, feedback, and iterative skill-building- not just content knowledge or final products. Because these skills develop over time through discussion, writing workshops, revision cycles, and guided practice, a challenge exam or single assessment would not provide a reliable measure of the sustained learning, practice and skill growth expected within the course.
To ensure all learners are supported and set up for long-term success in Grade 12 and beyond, students are expected to complete the English courses in sequence. Families with questions about placement or pathways( including AP English Literature) are welcome to reach out to the English Department or their child’ s academic advisor.
AP English Language and Composition may be added as an elective in Grade 11 or 12 and taken in addition to a required English course at the Grade 11 level or as an addition to English Studies / First Peoples at the Grade 12 level.
