English
English is a required subject for all students from Grades 8 to 12. As students progress through our five year program, they are provided with carefully scaffolded opportunities to develop increasingly sophisticated critical and creative thinking skills, and are encouraged to make meaningful connections between the texts they study and the world in which they live. Students are also empowered to become increasingly confident in their ability to express their ideas through written assignment and oral presentations, as well as collaborative learning opportunities. Representing a wide variety of Indigenous, global, classic and contemporary authors, texts include novels, short stories, poems, graphic novels, essays, podcasts and TED Talks. In ELA 8 and 9, students are introduced to analytical writing and discussionbased learning, while further developing their narrative writing and presentation skills.
In Grades 10 and 11, students select courses that allow them to focus their studies on aspects of the English curriculum that are of greatest interest to them. These courses include creative writing, literary studies, composition and spoken language. Class size also becomes smaller as students begin to meet around Harkness tables, developing their ability to work collaboratively with others while taking greater responsibility for their own learning.

In Grade 12, students can choose between three capstone courses to further refine their critical and creative thinking skills, as they become more effective communicators and collaborators. Students may choose to study AP Language and Composition at the grade 11 or 12 level, or AP Literature and Composition at the grade 12 level, as electives. Please note, in the past there was an opportunity to challenge Literary Studies 11 in order to take additional AP English courses in the grade 11 and 12 year. We found that no process adequately replaced a year-long English course. As such, challenging Literary Studies 11 will no longer be an option.
