Informed Decision-Making Through the Post-Secondary Process
Crofton House School students aspire to continue their education after graduating and the School has four Post-Secondary Counsellors who assist them on this path. The School is able to advise all students as individuals on their personal plan for post-secondary study. There are two areas that require the attention of all students and parents.
Use of Private Post-Secondary Consultants
The school has benefitted from the experiences of hundreds of graduates as well as direct connections with the majority of institutions attended by Crofton House graduates in Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom. In this way, the School is in an enviable position of tracking current trends, ensuring accurate information and navigating the nuances of the post-secondary landscape. Students are encouraged to rely on the resources they have through the School.
Some families choose to employ the use of private post-secondary consultants. The School requests that you share this information with the Post-Secondary Counsellor assigned to your daughter in order to ensure alignment in the information the students are receiving from various sources. The School will continue to work only with the student and family directly.
Purposeful and Powerful Applications: Limits on Number of Applications
The current post-secondary application process often involves responses to supplemental questions. These‘ supplementals’ vary in length and complexity; however, all take time and effort on the part of many individuals. Increasingly they require a demonstration of knowledge and genuine interest in the program to which the student is applying. In other words, responses for one school are not transferable to another. As a result, the time and effort students are putting into these supplementals is significant.
Casting the post-secondary net wide without consideration of the time required to complete the full application may have a negative impact on overall student success in this process. Spending time on one supplemental reduces the time available for others and this may impact the overall quality of these important application elements. Further, time spent on post-secondary applications limits the time available to focus on current courses. At some point, student time for learning is reduced and grades are negatively impacted, thereby lessening the student’ s ability to meet academic grade requirements. Furthermore students who over-invest their time in post-secondary applications have little time for co-curricular interests, leadership obligations, and healthy social interactions. For this reason, the School has set recommended limits on the number of applications a student should include in her post-secondary plan. These limits are based upon the School’ s extensive experience in this process, the number of supplementals that are involved in each application, and, increasingly, the unique nature of each supplemental.
Note: Crofton House School will support students with their applications according to the suggested limits.
