Classroom-based, using a variety of instructional strategies focusing on academic language acquisition with outside of time-table support offered if needed.
The English + 8 course follows the mainstream English 8 curriculum and includes additional units and resources for the purpose of building students’ academic language competency across the disciplines. The English + 8 students study three extra novels and engage in a rigorous examination of grammar skills used for effective writing in academic and creative domains. In an effort to maintain and promote their multilingualism, students are encouraged to speak their mother tongues at home and at school. Assessments align with mainstream academic standards.
TUTORIAL 9 +
Tutorial + 9 students have a compulsory full year tutorial in place of two half year semester elective courses. The Tutorial + 9 block is designed to support students’ use of academic English across the disciplines with a specific focus on the Tier 2 and 3 vocabulary used in English Language Arts, Social Studies, and Science. Students attend regular classes and meet as a cohort for the Grade 9 tutorial support block. Please note that this tutorial class does not receive a grade; rather, students are provided with formative evaluation that reflects their individual progress. Attendance is mandatory for all Tutorial + 9 students.

GRADE 11 AND 12 ENGLISH + SUPPORT
In Grade 11 and 12, students continue to receive language and writing support within the English + program. This occurs during their study blocks in small groups and 1:1 meetings.
Academic and Post-Secondary Counselling
Academic and Post-Secondary Counsellors work with students from Grade 8 to 12, to advise them in many areas including course selection, enrichment opportunities, career, and postsecondary options. In addition, students receive support regarding scholarship applications and optional work experience placements.
Post-secondary planning at CHS is a guided process based on developmental stages and best practices. Students are urged to avoid accelerating through the program, assuming more is better, and basing decisions on rumour and hearsay.
