Caution: Post-secondary institutions may not accept credits earned through this means.
Equivalency
Earning credit( s) through equivalency recognizes documented learning from outside the regular British Columbia school system( public or independent) that Crofton House School deems equivalent to the learning outcomes of a Ministry‐Developed, Ministry-Approved Language Template or Board / Authority Authorized Grade 10, 11 or 12 course.
“ Deems equivalent” means a match of approximately 80 % of the prescribed learning outcomes.
Prerequisite / Requirements: Application with Student Services and appropriate documentation. Approval of the Assistant Director, Teaching and Learning and relevant Department Head or Coordinator will depend upon a review of documentation submitted.
International students should note that there is a specific policy for evaluating equivalency.
Challenge
Earning credit( s) through the‘ challenge’ process is a means of awarding graduation credit for undocumented demonstrated prior learning. Students are entitled to use the‘ challenge’ process to receive credit for Ministry-Developed courses for Grades 10, 11 or 12.
The challenge process must assess students on the Curricular Competencies and Content of all Grade 10 to 12 courses. A challenge is considered successful when a student has achieved a standard of at least a C- and 50 percent; however, for all prerequisite courses, students must achieve a challenge grade of at least 90 %.
Prerequisite / Requirements: Approval will be determined through a pre-challenge review by the relevant Department Head and course teacher.
External Credentials
An external credential is earned for successfully completing a set of learning activities developed outside the Ministry.
Some courses may count for credit towards required courses under the Graduation Program( e. g. Fine Arts or Applied Skills), while others may count as credit towards elective courses.
The following resources are useful in assessing external credentials:
• Organizations Offering Approved External Credentials
• External Sport Credentials Program
• Course Registry
Prerequisite / Requirements: All documentation to be sent to Assistant Director, Teaching and Learning for approval.
Independent Directed Study( IDS)
Independent Directed Study credits may be awarded to students who have successfully completed independent work based on a subset of learning outcomes of Grades 10, 11 or 12 Ministry courses or Board Authorized courses. A student may study one or more learning outcomes in depth, or study more broadly a wide variety of learning outcomes from a single course.
IDS credits may only be used to satisfy elective requirements.
IDS courses can be for 1-4 credits. If students complete a portion of the outcomes for a course, schools may report their achievement to the Ministry using IDS credits.
Prerequisite / Requirements: All requests for an Independent Study must be emailed to Assistant Director, Teaching and Learning for review and approval.
