small group setting in order to develop the skills, habits and positive attitudes necessary for success at the secondary school level and beyond. In addition to obtaining teacher assistance with assignments, students learn study and test-taking strategies, build executive functioning skills( organization, time management, planning / prioritizing etc.) and learn how to better self-advocate. Students with exceptionalities formally identified by a psychologist or physician will be prioritized when scheduling LS blocks.
The learning that occurs in this block is as important as any other course and students with an LS block are required to be present in the Learning Strategies room where attendance is recorded and progress is monitored.
Students who are considering an LS block must consider the requirements for graduation. There is no credit awarded for this block.
Mixed Grade Blocks
The school’ s master timetable is created with the aim of supporting as many course requests as possible. One barrier that restricts course access for students is single section courses. For this reason, multiple sections of a course that is open to more than one grade are timetabled in a fluid manner rather than attempting to restrict a section to a specific student grade. Meeting a specified prerequisite is the only restriction to a student taking a course. As students move into higher grades, it is increasingly common for a course section to be made up of students from more than one grade. For example: a section of Pre-Calculus 11 will include students in Grade 10 and Grade 11; all will have completed Foundations of Mathematics and Pre-Calculus 10 at Crofton House School.
