With the exception of Grade 12 students who may choose to have one‘ study’ block, all students select courses for each of the 8 blocks of the CHS timetable. Some courses are required by the BC Ministry of Education while others are electives. Reflective of the Crofton House School mission, Inspiring girls to discover and pursue their personal excellence, elective courses in the pre-graduation years, Grades 8 and 9, are intended to provide students with opportunities to“ discover” potentially new areas of interest. In the graduation years, Grades 10 to 12, electives provide students with opportunities to“ pursue” areas of interest. The number of required and elective courses vary depending on student grade and, in the graduation years, on progress through the requirements of the BC Graduation Program.
CHS students are expected to carry a full 8-course load with the exception of approved‘ study’ blocks, Independent Study or Learning Strategies blocks. Ministry of Education grants are based upon students being in attendance a defined number of hours. Students who carry less than a full load may be subject to a fee in order for the school to offset the loss of Ministry of Education eligible student grant funds.
Requesting Courses
At the start of the second semester, students, with the guidance of teachers, older students and parents, select courses for the next academic year. The full schedule of the process from exploration to course selection and timetable finalization is listed in this handbook.
Construction of the school-wide timetable takes into account all student requests, available staffing, and classroom availability. As much as possible, timetable conflicts are minimized toward the goal of fulfilling as many student course requests as possible. The school is unable to guarantee that all course requests are possible or that a student will be able to make course changes once the timetable has been finalized. There are four reasons that a course request may not be accommodated: 1. The student does not have the prerequisites for the requested course.
2. The scheduled block( s) of the course conflicts with other requested courses which have been identified as having a higher preference.
3. There is insufficient interest in a course in a particular year, and those students who are interested in the course have other options available without impacting graduation requirements.
