Is acceleration required ( or recommended ) to take AP courses in mathematics ?
No . All mathematics courses at CHS prepare students for AP-level mathematics ( AP Calculus AB and / or AP Statistics ). Quite often , the most successful learning does not include acceleration as conceptual thinking , communication , and problem-solving skills take time to fully develop .
My daughter would like to accelerate her mathematical learning . What is the process ?
In general , acceleration is not recommended since the necessary conceptual thinking , communication , and problem-solving skills take time to fully develop . If acceleration is still of interest , a challenge exam can be written in the spring . Permission from the Department Head is required to accelerate . For all Grade 10-12 courses , the result of that assessment appears on your daughter ’ s transcript with a “ C ” to indicate that the course was not taken in a classroom . ( Note : Crofton House School does not accept summer school courses ).
Do all students take Calculus ? Do they have to take Calculus for university ?
No . Calculus is not required for graduation from high school . It is recommended , however , for some university programs , e . g . Commerce , Science , Engineering . Students should research their post-secondary requirements carefully to see if Calculus 12 ( or AP Calculus ) is required .
Do students need to have taken Pre-Calculus 12 prior to taking Calculus in Grade 12 ?
No . Most students take Pre-Calculus 12 at the same time as studying calculus and the mathematics department has developed a program that aligns the learning in these two courses .
What is the difference between the Foundations and Pre-Calculus streams of mathematics ?
Foundation courses are for students who are intending to study social sciences , humanities , and arts while Pre-Calculus courses are for mathematics-based university programs such as science , business , and engineering .
What is the difference between Calculus 12 , AP Calculus AB , and AP Calculus BC ?
Calculus 12 is a survey course of the first semester of university-level Calculus ; enrolling students need to have strong content and problem-solving skills . AP Calculus AB covers all of the first semester of university , plus an introduction to the second semester ; it is a very rigorous course and enrolling students need to have mastery of previous mathematical courses . AP Calculus BC fully covers both the first and second semester of first year Calculus at the university level ; it is by far the most rigorous of the three levels and is intended for students with a love of mathematics who are interested in studying mathematics , engineering , and / or physics at the university-level . The more rigorous the Calculus course chosen , the more difficult it may be for the student to achieve results similar to what they have had in their previous mathematics courses .
What is the structure of AP Statistics blended ?
AP Statistics blended is an opportunity for the CHS students to be co-taught , and co-learn , with students from St . George ’ s . The AP Statistics course will be blocked into the CHS schedule as usual , but some of those blocks will be study blocks . There will also be additional required class hours after school ( approximately biweekly ) when all of the students are brought together to learn at one of the two campuses . In the past , we have met after school from 4:00pm-6:00pm on Wednesdays , but the meeting times for 2025- 2026 will be communicated to the students when the school schedules are updated .
