Spoken Language 11 is designed for students who would like to gain confidence in their abilities as communicators by exploring oral storytelling , drama , debating and public speaking . Although spoken language is the focus of this course , students will also be provided with opportunities to further develop their analytical thinking and writing skills , through the close reading of non-fiction and literary texts . To prepare for more sophisticated writing required in English Studies 12 , students will review the components of advanced grammar and syntax , paying particular attention to the importance of clarity and precision . This course will use the Harkness method , as well as lecture , online , inquiry and project-based teaching and learning strategies to enable students to refine their reading , speaking , and writing skills .

English Studies 12 : Media and Composition provides opportunities for literature and nonfiction pieces to be studied side by side to explore the ways in which the English language can be used to promote reflection , to persuade , and to manipulate thought . Students will study a variety of texts including works of fiction , news articles , podcasts , graphic novels , and film . This course employs the Harkness method , as well as lecture , online inquiry , and project-based learning strategies to enable students to focus on mastering their critical and creative thinking skills , while developing their confidence in communicating their ideas effectively with others . Throughout the year , students will hone their ability to write clearly and effectively : they will engage in literary analysis , rhetorical analysis , and argumentative writing as well as creative writing in order to become confident communicators in their preparation for postsecondary studies .
