student ’ s current educational needs are being taken into consideration .
An IEP is developed for a student highlighting the learning strengths and needs as documented in the psychoeducational assessment . This document is communicated to teachers electronically through our school data management system ( MySchool ) and is used to support students in their learning . Teachers are reminded yearly in a staff meeting how to access this information . Further , teachers are invited to IEP meetings throughout the year to ensure an understanding of individual student accommodations and how to implement them in their classes . In an IEP we will only include accommodations that we are able to provide .
The school is able to support students with high incidence special needs categories , “ Q ”, and “ R ” and in many cases , categories “ D ”, “ G ”, “ H ” and “ K ”. Crofton House School does not create individualized programs to support students who are designated solely as Category P ( Gifted ). Through an enriched curriculum in all courses , students with this designation will receive the support required from their classroom teachers .
Who Needs an IEP ?
All students with a Ministry Special Education designation , except those identified students who require only minor adaptations , whose program is not modified and who are receiving in one school year , 25 hours or less remedial instruction by a person other than the class teachers .
It is not necessary for students without a Ministry designation , receiving regular tier 2 learning support , to have an IEP . In some cases it may be appropriate for a student to have a Student Support Plan ( SSP ) instead if a student is not eligible for a Ministry designation .
IEP Review and Progress Monitoring
A full review of an IEP must occur no less than once a year and with parent consultation . However , progress monitoring on every goal in the IEP will be ongoing . Once a student becomes an independent learner ( requiring less than 25 hours per year of remedial instruction ), they will not require an IEP and should be delisted .
There are several sets of standardized exams that require applications for specific accommodations . These applications require that accommodations for a student with a learning disability are currently being utilized at the school level and supported by a current assessment . These include the Graduation Assessments ( GNA , GLA ), the LPI and College Board exams , such as the PSAT , SAT , AP and the ACT college entrance exams . The accommodations provided are approved by the group sponsoring these exams . Crofton House applies on behalf of the student ; however , the School does not grant nor determine the accommodations . These are granted only by the sponsoring agency .
There are circumstances when a tutor may be recommended . If a family decides to engage a tutor , it is strongly recommended that the subject teacher school is notified so that the teacher and tutor are aligned in expectations .
English + Program
The English + Program at CHS has been developed to support experienced multilingual students as they work towards mastery of the academic language teachers use for lessons , assessments , and assignments . Because academic language mastery is a challenging process , the English + program supports students through all five-years of high-school , in-timetable and outside of time-table .
