Literary Studies and Creative Writing 10

Literary Studies and Creative Writing 10 is a full year course that fulfills the requirements for two English Language Arts 10 courses . During Literary Studies 10 , students read , discuss , and examine literature , from a range of genres , as they continue refining their analytical essay writing skills . In addition to identifying and evaluating literary devices and techniques , students are expected to consider the social , historical , and cultural contexts of the assigned material . During Creative Writing 10 , students explore creative expression through writing , while working within a supportive community of writers to build their writing skills in a range of genres . This course uses the Harkness method , as well as lecture , online , inquiry , and project-based teaching and learning strategies to enable students to focus on mastering their critical and creative thinking skills , while developing confidence in their ability to communicate their ideas effectively with others .
The Big Ideas explored in this course are :
• The exploration of text and story deepens our understanding of diverse , complex ideas about identity , others , and the world
• People understand text differently depending on their world views and perspectives
• Texts are socially , culturally , geographically , and historically constructed
• Language shapes ideas and influences others
• Questioning what we hear , read , and view contributes to our ability to be educated and engaged citizens
Assignments are assessed using Standards-Based Grading to help students set specific goals to see progress in their skills over the course of the year . Assignments may include formative and summative analytical paragraphs , essays , descriptive paragraphs , poetry , short stories , character sketches , project work , discussions , presentations , and public speaking .

Literary Studies and Spoken Language 10 is a full year course that fulfills the requirements for two English Language Arts 10 courses . During Literary Studies 10 , students read and examine literature from a range of genres , as they continue refining their analytical and formal essay writing skills . In addition to identifying and evaluating literary devices and techniques , students are expected to consider the social , historical , and cultural contexts of the assigned material . During Spoken Language 10 , students develop stronger public speaking skills , while expanding their understanding of the power of spoken word poems and TED Talks to engage audiences in the pursuit of important ideas . This course uses the Harkness method , as well as lecture , online , inquiry , and project-based teaching and learning strategies to enable students to focus on mastering their critical and creative thinking skills , while developing confidence in their ability to communicate their ideas effectively with others .
