• Making informed course selection for Grade 12 that will prepare students for postsecondary application requirements ;
• Continuing to investigate career options and post-secondary institutions of interest ;
• Attending presentations from representatives of various post-secondary institutions at CHS and local post-secondary fairs ;
• Visiting prospective campuses ;
• Participating in scheduled classes to learn about the post-secondary institution selection , application , and admissions processes ;
• Attending scheduled small group counselling sessions and individual meetings ; and
• Engaging in an ongoing dialogue with parents and / or guardians to ensure expectations and limitations are well communicated .
• From September to March , group meetings with post-secondary counsellors are facilitated through the Advisory program
• In December , students complete a Post- Secondary Investigation assignment in Career- Life Education 11 , in preparation for a one-onone meeting with their assigned Post-Secondary Counsellor . These meetings take place in January and February , and students must be accompanied by their parents / guardians .
• In January , Career-Life Education 11 students have scheduled time with the Post-Secondary Counsellors to focus their direction and begin to formulate a post-secondary plan .
• In the Spring , students will attend a series of workshops geared towards specific application processes and skill development . Individual Post-secondary meetings are available as needed .
• Standardized Testing Process
• In October , students considering applying to US post-secondary institutions have the opportunity to write a PSAT - a shortened version of the SAT test .
• In January , students have the opportunity to write a practice SAT and / or ACT , along with attending a mandatory follow-up session
• In the spring of Grade 11 , students who are interested in applying to universities outside of Canada begin to take SAT or ACT , and SAT subject tests ( if required by their desired post-secondary institution ).
• Grade 11 students who have not completed the Grade 10 Numeracy or Literacy Assessment , will complete these graduation requirements . Further , any students who wish to rewrite a graduation assessment must register with Student Services .
Grade 12
• Focus for Grade 12 learning includes :
• Gaining a comprehensive understanding of the post-secondary institution selection , application , and admissions processes , as well as scholarship information ;
• Seeking support from English teachers or post-secondary counsellors for supplemental application responses including proofreading of written submissions ;
• Requesting letters of recommendation / reference , as required ;
• Tracking post-secondary application deadlines and expectations in order to meet both ;
• Engaging in an ongoing dialogue with parents or guardians to ensure expectations and limitations are well communicated ;
• Sustaining learning in all courses until the end of the year in order to avoid having post-secondary offers of acceptance withdrawn ; and
• Grade 12 students work closely with their Post-Secondary Counsellor in both their Career-Life Connections class and through ongoing individual meetings .
