Learning Strategies Block
By application , students may be permitted to have one or more blocks in a timetable for Learning Strategies ( LS ). Students who have identified disabilities through a psychological-educational assessment may require the additional support provided by the team of specialists available as part of Student Services . Only students who have an IEP are permitted to have an LS block unless approved by the Assistant Director , Student Services .
The learning that occurs in this block is as important as any other course and students with an LS block are required to be present in the Learning Resource room where attendance is recorded and progress is monitored .
Students who are considering an LS block must consider the requirements for graduation . There is no credit awarded for this block .
Mixed Grade Blocks
The school ’ s master timetable is created with the aim of supporting as many course requests as possible . One barrier that restricts course access for students is single section courses . For this reason , multiple sections of a course that is open to more than one grade are timetabled in a fluid manner rather than attempting to restrict a section to a specific student grade . Meeting a specified prerequisite is the only restriction to a student taking a course . As students move into higher grades , it is increasingly common for a course section to be made up of students from more than one grade . For example : a section of Pre-Calculus 11 will include students in Grade 10 and Grade 11 ; all will have completed Foundations of Mathematics and Pre-Calculus 10 at Crofton House School .
Five Course Categories
Courses are categorized into five groups . When selecting courses , students should begin with required courses before selecting elective courses . Attention must also be given to courses that a student intends on studying in future years as some courses have prerequisite courses or courses that are recommended .
Required - Courses established by the BC Ministry of Education for inclusion in the timetable of students in Grades 8 and 9 or as a graduation requirement for students in Grades 10 to 12 . Students begin to build their timetable with required courses .
Elective - Courses offered at Crofton House School in support of its mission by providing students with opportunities beyond required courses to discover new fields of study or pursue learning in specific areas of interest . Students complete building a timetable with elective courses noting that in the graduation program a specific number of elective courses must be completed .
Prerequisite - A course which must be completed in order to continue study in higher level courses . For example , English 8 is a prerequisite for English 9 and Science 10 is a prerequisite for Chemistry 11 .
Corequisite - A course which must be completed at the same time as another course . For example , Pre-Calculus 12 and Calculus 12 are corequisites .
Recommended - Courses that provide knowledge , skills and / or understanding that enhance study in higher or similar courses .
