This course uses social studies inquiry processes to provide students with an overview of selected world civilizations from the post-classical to the early modern periods . Students will explore factors that influence the development of civilizations as well as the contact between civilizations and the resulting social , cultural , economic , political and environmental impacts as a result of the contact . This course is framed by the following Big Ideas : contacts and conflicts between peoples stimulate significant cultural , social , political change ; human and environmental factors shape changes in population and living standards ; exploration , expansion , and colonization had varying consequences for different groups ; and changing ideas about the world created tension between people wanting to adopt new ideas and those wanting to preserve established traditions . Students will be introduced to relevant curricular competencies that are necessary for study in this area , and they will be given the opportunity to develop these competencies as the course progresses . Assessment may include : student project work , presentations , artefact analyses , and a range of writing assignments .

This course uses social studies inquiry processes to provide students with an overview of the social , political , economic , and technological forces as well as the emerging ideas and ideologies that profoundly influenced the societies and events of the 18th to
20th century . Students will also examine the relationship between Indigenous and European societies and explain the role each played in the development of Canada . This course is framed by the following Big Ideas : emerging ideas and ideologies profoundly influence societies and events ; the physical environment influences the nature of political , social , and economic change ; disparities in power alter the balance of relationships between individuals and between societies ; collective identity is constructed and can change over time . Curricular competencies developed at this level will build on the competencies introduced in previous years . Assessment may include : student project work , presentations , artefact analyses , and a range of writing assignments .

This course uses social studies inquiry processes to develop thoughtful and responsible young citizens who are equipped with the skills necessary to obtain and evaluate information , think critically about events , form opinions and defend positions . The Social Studies 10 curriculum allows students to engage with and apply these skills while developing an understanding of the history of Canada and the world in the 20th century . This course is framed by the following Big Ideas : global and regional conflicts have been a powerful force in shaping our contemporary world and identities ; the development of political institutions is influenced by economic , social , ideological , and geographic factors ; worldviews lead to different perspectives and ideas about developments in Canadian society ; historical and contemporary injustices challenge the narrative and identity of Canada as an inclusive , multicultural society . Curricular competencies developed at this level will build on the competencies introduced in previous years . Assessment may include : student project work , debates , presentations , interactive group assignments , and unit tests .
