From The Editor Dear Illinois readers and supporters ,
In this edition of ABUSE Magazine we are focusing on the risks and dangers of texting while driving , sexual ABUSE , bullying , teen pregnancy , prescription drugs and gun safety
All of these topics hold great importance when it comes to our youth . Our goal at ABUSE Magazine is to bring awareness to each of these issues and to provide the right resources .
Texting
The evidence keeps mounting that texting while driving is too often destructive and deadly .
One example of a fatal crash near Omaha , Nebraska in mid-July of this year is being blamed on the driver , due to texting while driving in the seconds prior to the crash .
The crash on Old Lincoln Highway that killed two teenage females a 19 year old and an 18 year old girl has been blamed by the Pottawattamie County Sherrif ’ s office on texting while driving .
The sherrif ’ s department told WOWT . com , the website for one of Omaha ’ s top local TV stations , that while the victims blood showed small traces of marijuana , there was no doubt that the driver who caused the accident was in the middle of texting when the accident occurred .
This is just one example of the thousands of teen deaths that occur each year that are due to the consequences of texting while driving , and substance ABUSE .
Sexual ABUSE
We also wanted to educate our youth on sexual abuse . Teen Dating Violence is becoming more and more common , studies show that teens who are sexually active at a young age are often victims of involuntary sex . We have included warning signs for you or someone you might know .
Teen pregnancy is also included in this subject and we wanted to include facts that teens should know before having unprotected sex , such as teen pregnancy , unwanted pregnancies and STD ’ s .
Bullying
Bullying is a topic that we at ABUSE Magazine really wanted to focus on this school year .
Bullying is a common occurrence in most schools . According to the American Psychological Association , approximately “ 40 % to 80 % of school-age children experience bullying at some point during their educational years . Regardless of the grade level , environment , gender , religion , or sexual orientation , bullying can happen to anyone . Most children experience bullying at some point in their academic careers .

Prescription Drugs
Prescription Drugs are really an underlined problem today , teens are getting their hands on these dangerous drugs without a prescription and stealing them from a common place ..... their homes . Prescription drugs are the leading cause of death when mixed with Benzodiazepine ’ s and unfortunately teens find this out in the worse possible way , by death or a near death experiences . Our goal is to bring awareness to today ’ s youth on how dangerous it can be to take a prescription drug that is not prescribed to them .
Gun Safety
We also wanted to focus on gun safety tips for teens , we at ABUSE magazine know this is a very touchy subject and only want to educate our youth . We are including tips for students and faculty incase you , yourself or someone you know are ever in this traumatic situation you will be prepared . Also tips for parents on how to store any weapons in the home .
With your help and support we can make a difference and reduce the sometimes tragic occurrences that stem from bullying , distractive driving , gun violence , substance and sexual ABUSE .
