The Sub-28 Club

By the beginning of 2022 , the SA Record stood at 27:38 , set by Stephen Mokoka in Manchester in 2015 , and he was one of just four South Africans who had dipped under the 28-minute barrier – and none had been able to do it on home soil . Then in July 2022 , that all changed , as Maxime Chaumeton posted a 27:58 in the Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K . The following April , in the inaugural Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10K , he was joined in the sub-28 club by Precious Mashele and Thabang Mosiako , with Precious claiming the SA Record from Stephen with an incredible 27:35 effort . This was also the first time two South Africans had gone sub- 28 in the same race .
Just a few months later the record books were rewritten again , as three local athletes dipped under 28 minutes in the same race , at the 2023 Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K . After a sinew-stretching sprint finish , Kabelo Mulaudzi ( then running under the surname Seboko ) took the win in 27:56 , with Stephen and Thabang both clocking 27:59 but being adjudged second an third respectively . This meant that Stephen and Thabang became the first South Africans to clock two sub-28s , with Thabang the first to do so on home soil both times . ( Since then , Thabang clocked a third sub-28 in France last November , making him the only South African to date to have achieved a treble of sub-28s .)
This year , we saw Elroy Gelant run a 27:54 in the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K in May , becoming the fifth South African to go sub-28 on home soil in the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series . ( The only athlete to have achieved this in another race is Adriaan Wildchutt , who clocked 27:53 in Cape Town last October .) Tragically , if not for his untimely passing in 2023 , the late Mbuleli Mathanga may also have joined this exclusive club as well , as he ran 28:03 in the same 2022 Absa RUN YOUR CITY DURBAN 10K that saw Maxime post his sub-28 . Happily for South African road running , his memory is being honoured by his friends and rivals , as more of them push to join the Sub-28 Club .
