Brewing Heritage
Beer has been brewed in South Africa for hundreds of years , with both indigenous and European influence contributing to the country ’ s modern-day beer market , which is dominated by South African Breweries ( SAB ), the world ’ s second-largest brewing
company . The origins of SAB can be traced to the Johannesburg Gold Rush of 1886 , when Charles Glass , founder of the Castle Brewery , began selling beer to miners . The new beer soon became popular amongst the prospectors , and in 1889 one of Johannesburg ’ s early newspapers , The Digger ’ s News , declared it “ a phenomenal success .”
In 1895 , on the success of Castle Lager , South African Breweries was founded , with its head office at the Castle Brewery . Two years later , SAB became the first industrial company to list on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange . Fast-forward nearly 100 years to 1994 , and with Castle Lager now being brewed in nine countries and sold in 40 countries , SAB introduced Castle Lite , a reduced alcohol ( 4 %) and lower calorie variant of Castle Lager . Castle Lite is lagered at -2.5 ° C , and is packaged with South Africa ’ s first thermochromic temperature indicator on the bottle .
“ Castle Lite ’ s commitment to innovation and excellence aligns perfectly with the spirit of the Absa RUN YOUR CITY Series ,” adds Meyer . “ Following a successful debut at the Absa RUN YOUR CITY GQEBERHA 10K , we eagerly anticipate the next event , the Absa RUN YOUR CITY CAPE TOWN 10K , where we will witness an unforgettable blend of athleticism and celebration on Sunday 12 May .”
