Midas motorsport | by Motoring Correspondent Midas Historics return to spiritual home ➲ It was fitting that a Mustang won in the month the nameplate celebrated its 5oth anniversary Historic car racing returned to its true South African home in style on Saturday, April 12, during round two of the 2014 Midas Historic Tour at the Zwartkops Raceway near Pretoria. T opping the day’s activities were two races for SKF Pre-1966 Production Cars. Both victories went to Franco Scribante in his Remos Ford Mustang GT350. On the first occasion he was followed across the line by Jonathan du Toit (TAR Chev Nova), Mark du Toit (TAR Chevelle), Roy Prando (Alfa Giulia Sprint) and MJ Maerien (Exclusive Ford Fairlane). Front-runner Ferdi van Niekerk (Double F Ford Mustang) spun his car within sight of the finish line on the final lap, to lose a certain third place. In race two Jonathan du Toit broadsided the Chev Nova while running up front, leaving Mark du Toit to take the second spot from Ferdi van Niekerk, Jonathan du Toit and Clive Densham (Alfa Giulia). Action-packed race day for single-seaters at Killarney black-flagged, eliminating him from the first race result. Nailbiting race action was the order of the day for the South African SingleSeater competitors at Killarney on 31 march. Each of the categories saw tough battles taking place for track position. Wolk’s elimination opened the door for to Nicholas van Weely (87 - Anglorand) take the win, with Orr in second, a lack of seat time and race car set-up slowing him down. Werner Scholtz (3 - Motorvia / Investchem) claimed third in that first race. In the Formula Volkswagen series, all eyes were on four-time World Karting Champion Wesleigh Orr (130 - Hollard). Qualifying set the stage when just 0.03 of a second separated Robert Wolk (1 - Midas / Chemical Logistics / ATE) and Orr. Wolk was the favourite for another strong performance after his round one success. An oil leak in race one, however, spoiled a good qualifying session result and saw him ➲ Robert Wolk had mixed fortunes at Killarney | Wheels in Action 105 may 2014 Race two provided some of the closest racing yet seen in Formula Volkswagen. Van Weely, keen to repeat his race-winning finish got involved in a tough battle with Wolk. The pair duelled throughout the race, each pushing hard for the lead and cornering side-by-side to the delight of race fans. It was eventually Wolk who emerged victorious by the narrowest of margins, 0.3 of a second ahead of Van Weely. Jason Campos (19 - Hollard Insurance) capitalised on a solid performance with two fourth places to claim third overall for the day. Ahead of him in the standings was Orr in second and Van Weely claiming a hard-won first.
