AutoX stands as a cornerstone of South African manufacturing, recognised as the leading local producer of high-quality lead-acid automotive batteries. Serving both the OEM and aftermarket sectors, the company delivers renowned brands like Willard and SABAT and serves as the official distributor of VARTA ® batteries across South Africa and beyond.
AutoX ' s heritage stretches back more than seven decades. The Willard brand was first produced domestically in Gqeberha in 1954 under licence from ESB International. SABAT, established in Johannesburg in 1967, quickly gained traction as a vibrant lifestyle brand, synonymous with motorsport and adventurous pursuits. Over the years, AutoX has consolidated its strengths, including acquisitions like Autocycle Centre and Zimco in 2021 and 2023 respectively, to bolster both its market presence and raw material sustainability.
Since its first production in 1954, AutoX’ s Gqeberha manufacturing site has evolved dramatically. The facility employs high-grade lead alloys, customised curing processes, patented moulding for lightweight yet robust lead straps, and stringent paste-mix controls to ensure batch-to-batch consistency and performance even under Africa’ s toughest conditions.
AutoX’ s Gqeberha plant earned the distinction of being the first battery production facility in Africa to receive SABS Quality Management certification( 1987). The company maintains a wide portfolio of certifications that include SANS 2:2013 / SANS 60095:2018, ISO 9001:2015, ISO 50001:2018, ISO 45001:2018, ISO 14001:2015, IATF 16949:2016, and QB – ISUZU Quality Basics.
Innovation is at AutoX’ s core. Its in-house R & D collaborates with South African institutions, including Nelson Mandela University, where AutoX helped establish an independent OEM test facility. They have developed patented charging algorithms and designs that have set industry benchmarks.
AutoX boasts an expansive distribution network that services more than 3,000 automotive replacement retail outlets, OEMs, and international markets, including exports to the UK. The company operates seven strategic warehouse locations and a dedicated“ Xpress” dealer channel for efficient logistics. Beyond its factories, AutoX has established branches in Johannesburg, Bloemfontein, East London, and Port Elizabeth, among others, ensuring reach even in remote areas.
