Bakkies are no longer a farm or commercial fleet purchase. More middle-class South African families now drive a double-cab bakkie as their family vehicle than ever before.
The changing bakkie buyer profile has created three nearly parallel markets in South Africa. Brands serving the traditional farm and commercial fleet bakkie buyer, the 4x4 overlander, and those selling double-cab bakkies as family vehicles to urban buyers.
For automakers with a bakkie legacy and engineering expertise in body-on-frame double-cab design, the shift in market demand has been very profitable. Top-grade double-cab bakkies sell for luxury-car pricing, but the mechanical engineering and design involved are reasonably simple, with competitive cost scaling, because all bakkies( single-, extended- and double-cab) share the same platforms and core components.
Whereas double-cabs were a niche two decades ago, today they are possibly the most profitable, high-margin vehicle segment in South Africa. And leadership in double-cab sales, is a mark of pride for brands.
Leading the lifestyle bakkie market
Although Toyota ' s overall leadership in the bakkie market remains unchallenged, it does not dominate the double-cab segment. Ford does. It is a testament to the Ranger ' s cabin comfort and interior architecture. This bakkie has all the load capacity and dirt-road ability that South Africans need, but with the interior comfort for a five-up after-school outing for extramurials, or that weekend family road trip.
With its emphasis on cabin comfort and digital connectivity( via Ford ' s excellent MySync infotainment), the Ford Ranger is everything South Africans need in a double-cab bakkie and family car. And the sales statistics prove that.
