Compact cargo vehicle market growing

Understanding the transformation of South Africa’ s small-vehicle cargo fleets, from bakkies to five-door cars.

Since the 1980s, South African shorthaul urban logistics depended on the compact bakkie. Small enough to easily get in and out of industrial zones with narrow streets and heavy traffic, the compact bakkie was also great at parking in tricky spaces while delivering.

From its peak in the early 2000s, when South Africa had several front-wheel drive, half-ton bakkies available, today there are none. What happened?
Most delivery bakkies with a conventional canopy, including windows and a tailgate section, are just too vulnerable to smashand-grab cargo theft. The need for compact bakkie alternatives is being met by hatchback and crossover cargo vehicles, with Hyundai capturing the bulk of this market with its Grand i10 Cargo, introduced in 2019.
How does Hyundai make its Grand i10 into a cargo carrier? By removing the rear seats to create a larger load area and upgrading cabin safety with a mid-cabin grid, to protect the driver from cargo shifts under emergency braking. The rear windows and tailgate glass also feature grid guards to protect the cargo in a smash-and-grab incident.
Hyundai’ s marketing and product team recognised that legacy compact bakkie users didn’ t want a bigger bakkie. They wanted a compact delivery vehicle. Which is exactly what the i10 Grand Cargo is. Compact enough to be agile when collecting or delivering in congested traffic or very tight delivery zones.
More models added
The success of i10 Grand Cargo created the business case for a larger Hyundai delivery vehicle variant, with more power and a higher loading height, to reduce the risk of lower back injury for drivers who self-load. That vehicle is the Venue Cargo.
With a 1,296-litre load volume and 600 kg payload, Venue Cargo gives short-haul logistics fleets all the capability they need from a compact panel van, with passengercar comfort. Crucially, Hyundai’ s sophisticated touchscreen infotainment and smartphone syncing allow all the navigation and communication benefits of Apple CarPlay / Android Auto, which is invaluable for drivers navigating a hectic Gauteng or Cape Town delivery schedule.
VW pioneered the passenger car cargo vehicle concept in South Africa, with the Vivo Xpress, launched in 2016 and discontinued in 2018. Observing Hyundai’ s success with its i10 and Venue Cargo models, VW’ s responded to the market demand by reviving the Vivo Express for 2026.
Renault has responded to demand for delivery vehicles converted from passenger cars with its Triber Express. It features a large 1500-litre load area, 542 kg payload, and heavy-duty roof rack.
