Don ' t ignore those air lines

Air brake maintenance isn ' t for amateurs.

South Africa ' s transport routes feature some of the world ' s most spectacular, yet challenging, mountain passes. What makes for an inspired family drive and vacation picture opportunity can become a potentially catastrophic risk for trucks with brake failure.

Van Reenen ' s. Long Tom. Sir Lowry ' s. These are just three of the country ' s high-risk mountain passes used by heavy-duty long-haul trucking fleets. Sand trap runoffs serve a crucial safety function, but on some of South Africa ' s steep mountain passes, a brake issue might occur at the start of the descent, with several corners between the runaway moment and that sand trap.
There are several indicators that an air brake system is decaying and requires maintenance or a component replacement. Experienced truckers and maintenance technicians are attuned to the sound of a hissing air line. And drivers know when pedal pressure and braking response is becoming inconsistent, an indication that the system ' s pressure integrity is failing.
South Africa doesn ' t experience the extreme winter temperatures of some Northern Hemisphere trucking markets, where moisture in the system can ice-up, blocking airflow and dramatically reducing braking power. But what local trucking fleets need to contend with is hose cracking. The extreme heat of South Africa ' s long-haul transport environment is severe on hoses, risking embrittlement and cracking.
SPECIALIST MAINTENANCE MATTERS
Given the fundamental role of an air brake system in safe truck operations, it ' s crucial to use only the best OEM components and skilled service technicians with the appropriate tools. Seals guarantee the integrity of your fleet ' s air brakes. The risk is that unskilled maintainers or technicians working on an unfamiliar new brake system with an unfamiliar form-factor seal can fit the seal incorrectly, leading to failure.
Connectors are the other issue. An air brake system with the latest lines and seals will fail if the connectors have not been properly placed, fastened, and pressure-checked.
Brake failure is not like a start-up engine or transmission failure, which can lead to customer disputes due to delivery delays. Brake failures cause vehicle losses, insurance claims, and possible criminal consequences.
Air brakes are powerful, but the smallest leakage or seepage can cause them to fail during an emergency braking response, exactly when drivers need all the system integrity and stopping power available.
Experience and standards are the only real hedge against incorrectly serviced air brakes, and that ' s where proven aftermarket air brake specialists prove their worth.
As with everything in automotive engineering, to guarantee safety, all the system components need to be present and working. That means the smallest details, like tiny seals and connectors, are expertly fitted and system-checked. Making the difference between trucks descending Van Reenen ' s or Sir Lowry ' s with confidence, instead of becoming an insurance statistic.
