In a new PS Tips video, Parts Specialist Niklas discusses control valves for fuel pumps in diesel engines. These valves manage fuel pressure and flow for accurate injection. DT Spare Parts offers a wide range of control valves for fuel pumps in diesel engines, compatible with various brands.
Niklas, explains in the video that the holes in the valve allow fuel to flow through it and also serve to cool the valve’ s solenoid coil, which can get very hot due to high pressure and current flow. By precisely controlling the injection pressure, better combustion, maximum engine performance, and reduced fuel consumption are achieved. Additionally, this precision protects
the injection nozzles and other system components from overloading.
Remember that using clean fuel and regularly replacing the fuel filter are vital to prevent deposits and ensure a long service life. Niklas also offers another valuable tip:“ If the vehicle doesn’ t start despite having checked the battery voltage, a faulty pressure control valve might be the culprit. You can use an ohmmeter or an acoustic test to check if the valve is functioning correctly.”
DIESEL ENGINE TROUBLESHOOTING AND SAFETY Safety Precautions
• High-Pressure Lines: Never disconnect high-pressure fuel lines( e. g., CR) while the engine is running, as this can cause damage to components or personal injury.
• Fire Hazard: Diesel fuel can ignite and burn at high temperatures. Always be mindful of ignition sources and disconnect the battery terminals when working on the fuel system.
Troubleshooting
• Injector Failure: If an injector failure is suspected, disconnecting individual fuel lines( low-pressure only) while the engine is running can help identify the faulty injector. Use caution and follow safety guidelines.
• Engine Does Not Start: If the engine fails to start and the ignition remains off, check the pressure pump cut-off valve and the fuse.
• Engine Stutters When Starting: Stuttering after a period of inactivity may be due to issues with the preglow system, clogged filters, leaks in the system, or air in the system. Air in the system can also cause fuel to return to the tank.
• Pressure Control Valve:
• Check the plug connections for voltage, corrosion, and proper clamping.
• Measure the resistance at the solenoid coil with the engine off; it should be very low. High resistance or no continuity indicates a defective valve that needs replacement.
• Solenoid Coil Insulation: Check the solenoid coil insulation against the housing for continuity. There should be no continuity if a two-contact plug is used and the housing is not designed as an earth conductor.( Multi-contact plugs usually have separate earth lines).
• Valve Movement: You can usually feel the movement of the armature inside the valve by placing your hand on it during actuation.
• Diesel Quality: Diesel fuel has no cleaning properties and its quality can vary. Regular filter changes and water separator drainage are essential.
