Fluid-free brakes promise more power and much simpler servicing.
Brembo is renowned for its high-performance brake systems, featuring iconic red callipers. It has been Ferrari’ s F1 brake supplier for decades and regarded as a pioneer in highperformance brake systems for passenger cars and motorcycles.
Developments in brake design have mostly been about advanced rotor and pad materials, but Brembo has now claimed a breakthrough in brake engineering and packaging. Brembo’ s innovation? The world’ s first production car brake system without any hydraulic lines.
Reduced corrosion
Developed under the Sensify brand, this new Brembo brake system uses electronically controlled actuators at each wheel for brake actuation and control. The Sensify design is fluid-free, eliminating traditional hydraulic fluid lines and master cylinders.
For the automotive aftermarket, Sensify is significant. It means no more brake bleeds or master cylinder services. Brake fluid is highly corrosive and considered a hazardous material. That means it requires meticulous handling and creates an environmental compliance burden for workshops in terms of handling, storage, and disposal.
In automotive assembly lines, hydraulic brake fluid poses an even greater operational hazard, leading to corrosion and handling risks.
Exceptional control
But what are the Sensify advantages, aside from a much cleaner, less toxic assembly line and brake service bay, in workshops?
The absence of hydraulic lines and master cylinders simplifies packaging for new-vehicle designer teams. Sensify allows designers and engineers to make more efficient use of space throughout the vehicle architecture without worrying about running hydraulic lines or providing service access.
Without any pressure or actuation lag, the Sensify electronic brake system delivers much better brake performance, especially in emergencies, on dirt roads, or on wet surfaces. Brake force distribution is nothing new, but the Sensify system enables a level of brake force distribution at individual wheels that’ s impossible to achieve with current hydraulic systems.
During an emergency lane change to avoid a collision, exceptional brake force is required, distributed asymmetrically across the wheels to aid stability. In an emergency avoidance scenario, Sensify can respond faster and more accurately than a traditional hydraulic brake system.
Sensify is also noiseless under severe braking when the ABS is engaged, unlike the warbling sound of a hydraulic system. This is important because the noise of hydraulic ABS can startle drivers and cause them to reduce pedal force at a crucial moment during emergency braking.
Brake system longevity is another Sensify benefit. Unlike a hydraulic system, the electronic brake callipers fully retract when the brake pedal is released, saving pads and rotors from needless scrubbing wear.
The Sensify electronic brake system has been homologated for production with a major global OEM, to be revealed by Brembo in the next few months.
